Where should First Aid Kits Be stored in the workplace?

Accessibility is Key

Firstly, the placement of first aid kits should prioritise accessibility. In the event of an emergency, time is of the essence, and having first aid kits within quick and easy reach can make all the difference. First aid kits should be stored in areas that are visible and easily accessible to all employees, with no obstructions blocking the way.

Proximity to High-Risk Areas

Workplaces with specific high-risk areas, such as construction sites, manufacturing plants, or chemical laboratories, need to pay particular attention to the positioning of first aid kits. These kits should be placed as close as possible to these areas to address any emergencies that arise promptly. 

Sufficient Distribution Across the Workplace 

Having just one first aid kit in the office isn't enough, especially for larger workspaces. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) suggests that a first aid kit should be available within a 3 to 4-minute response time, which             means larger workplaces might need multiple kits distributed throughout the premises. 

Staff Break Rooms and Common Areas 

Locating first aid kits in staff break rooms or other common areas is an excellent strategy. These places are usually easily accessible and well-known to all employees. Moreover, placing kits in these areas can help foster a broader awareness of workplace safety among employees. 

Near Emergency Equipment 

It can be beneficial to place first aid kits near other emergency equipment like fire extinguishers or automated external defibrillators (AEDs). Grouping these tools together can create a centralized emergency response area, making it easier for employees to locate in a crisis.
